Benefits of POSE

POSE is a one-hour outpatient procedure that is performed through the mouth and does not require any incisions or cuts. It has a number of significant advantages over traditional bariatric surgery:

  • Less invasive
  • No external incisions
  • Shorter recovery time
  • Safer procedure with fewer complications
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Leaves no visible scars
  • Reduces hunger drive
  • Brings long-lasting weight loss results

The enthusiastic reports of POSE patients include speedy recovery time, immediate hunger decrease, reduced blood pressure and a steady improvement in healthier food choices and overall well-being. With such an attractive set of benefits, POSE is becoming an extremely popular weight-loss treatment option.

POSE is primarily designed for those who are 20-70 pounds overweight, which accounts for about 35% of all adult Americans (According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Center for Health Statistics). Until now, there have been very few long-term solutions available for this considerable segment of the population, and none that achieve results so quickly. For individuals 15 to 20 pounds overweight, wellness & nutritional programs such as MyWeight, have had remarkable results. For those who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or more, bariatric surgery such as gastric bypass, gastric sleeve or LAP-BAND® are generally recommended.

These factors have historically left the “mid-range” 20-70 pound overweight patients wishing for more effective treatment options. POSE has become an answer for many, and now shows the potential to deliver stable weight loss results to these individuals. Patients from different regions of the country come to Louisiana to take advantage of this same-day weight loss solution. How It Works

Loading the player...
Traditionally, weight loss surgery procedures have required multiple incisions in order to reduce the size of the stomach. Until recently these procedures have also posed certain medical risks, including some post-operative pain, and resulted in minor scarring. A significant advantage of POSE is its absence of any incisions, which minimizes any possible discomfort or chance of complications, and dramatically decreases the recovery time.

The Equipment

Our specially trained surgeons at Surgical Specialists of Louisiana employ the state-of-the art equipment to perform the advanced POSE procedure. It involves the use of a flexible, steerable tube that is divided into four separate channels, one of which is equipped with a miniature video camera that allows the surgeon to see the operative site. Other channels are used to insert special surgical tools, such as tissue anchors and instruments that help to secure the stomach tissue and to place the anchors.

The POSE Procedure

POSE is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia, which usually takes about an hour. During the procedure, a tube is introduced into the patient’s mouth through the esophagus and is then situated in the spongy part of the stomach that stretches out to accommodate large meals. This portion of the stomach is also responsible for the secretion of powerful hunger hormones that can lead to overeating. After the tube is positioned it is turned and securely locked in a desirable position. The surgical instruments are threaded down small channels inside the tube into the stomach. These tiny instruments are used to clasp and maneuver small portions of stomach tissue, creating small folds. Using an anchor, the folds are then sutured to hold them in place. This process is repeated in strategic locations until the stomach volume is decreased sufficiently, and the desired effect is achieved.

The majority of our POSE patients are able to leave the hospital the same day that the procedure is performed. Those who have traveled from out of town for surgery can generally fly home the next afternoon.
